The Southampton City Vision consultation has now closed. We will share results in the coming weeks and there will be further opportunity to give us your views later in the year.

A busy shopping street

In your responses to our previous stage of consultation you told us that growth and investment is a high priority. You value local high streets and recognise the importance of supporting local independent businesses meaning that you don’t want to see all investment happening exclusively in the city centre. You also told us that the city needs some investment to improve public spaces and make Southampton a pleasant space that people are proud of and enjoy spending time in.

Southampton has a thriving night-time economy i.e. facilities which are allowed to be stay open past 1am. It is not appropriate for these facilities to be located in all areas of the city and we'd like your help to identify where is suitable for our late-night economy. You can let us know using the interactive map below.

Unfortunately the Local Plan cannot allocate land for specific uses, it can only allocate for types of uses as defined in the Town and Country Planning (Use Classes) Order. Please see here for a simply summary of the current use classes - Use Classes - Change of use - Planning Portal. We will however consider your comment for the allocation of a Use Class F type of community leisure use, thank you.

Thank you for your suggestion, we will consider this in our review of all the city's centres and their classifications for planning purposes.

  • Share It would be good to have an option to reduce current zones. For example there is an ongoing discussion about the appropriateness of late night activity in the residential area of the Old Town. There are dozens of places open late we need to preserve some of the heritage areas and protect quality of life for residents. on Facebook Share It would be good to have an option to reduce current zones. Thank you, we will be reviewing existing zones through this process and register your comments.

  • Share Why are you focussing so much on the night time economy and venues that open to 1am or 3am? As someone aged 47 with 2 children and always lived in Southampton, I am more interested in things to do for the family. I can think of 10-20 ideas of things that Sothampton lacks, which is a total embarassement, especially given the population and number of students. There have been several significant key sites that have recently had developments approved - even the wrongly named 'leisure world' that contains no leisure! I'm sure the council should be able to broker a deal to incorporate low rental space to encourage an operator to run something like an ice rink, mini golf, arena etc etc? Very very disappointing. on Facebook Share Why are you focussing so much on the night time economy and venues that open to 1am or 3am? Thank you for your comments. We are asking specifically about the night time economy at this stage as this something that needs to be updated and we are keen to gather views. There will further consultation later this year on all elements of the Plan.
